Canadian owners of XOOM Wi-Fi rejoice as Motorola has just announced the long awaited Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update is now available for download. Ice Cream Sandwich for Motorola XOOM with Wi-Fi has been available for quite a while but only in the United States. Today, Motorola did the unthinkable and released the update in Canada as well. However, the US-based handset maker still has lots of devices to update in the following months, and the only one that received its promised upgrade is the XOOM Wi-Fi. According to Motorola, the major update is pushed OTA (over the air), in waves, so XOOM Wi-Fi owners should wait to be notified on the update. Obviously, it’s recommended to back up all personal data stored on the tablet prior to upgrading to Ice Cream Sandwich. Also, make sure the slate’s battery is at least 50% charged and the Wi-Fi connection is stable. Once the update process is completes successfully, users will notice the updated browser with faster rendering, zoom and pan. In addition, user will now be able to save pages for offline reading and request desktop versions of websites. The application drawer has been redesigned In All Apps launcher, so users can now simply drag an app to get information about it, or immediately uninstall it. It is also possible to disable a pre-installed app. There’s also a new system font for improved readability and a new typeface, dubbed Roboto, which is specially optimized for high resolution screens. The Gallery application has been completely redesigned too, and now features a photo editor, allowing users to crop and rotate pictures, set levels, remove red eyes, or add effects. Motorola has just announced the availability of the update, so we’re still waiting for users’ feedback. Hopefully, it will not be plagued by issues. More details on the benefits of the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for Motorola XOOM Wi-Fi can be found here.

Nokia TV App Arrives on Nokia’s Windows Phones - MobilEgypt

Last month, Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia announced the upcoming availability of its Nokia TV application for devices running under Windows Phone, though confirmed it only for users in its homeland country. Today, we learn that the mobile application is available for download for Nokia Lumia users in Finland, providing them with access to favorite TV shows straight from their mobile phones. All that users need to do is to search for it in the app portal. In the Windows Phone Marketplace, the new mobile application is listed as capable of providing users with the possibility to browse lists of television services available locally at a single site. Moreover, it will also enable them to easily search all services available at one time, and to select the show they want to watch and start playing immediately. When announcing the mobile app, Nokia said that it would offer support for broadcasters’ existing internet TV business models. Nokia TV users will be able to browse or search through the available catalogues of TV services from major local broadcasters without the need to sign-up or register. Moreover, they will be able to play these TV shows on their devices without registration as well. Nokia TV is yet another exclusive application that the Finnish handset vendor has launched for its users, in an attempt to differentiate from other phone makers. Previously, Nokia provided its Windows Phone users with applications such as Nokia Music and Nokia Reading, as well as with access to navigation services through the Nokia Maps app. Unfortunately, the company did not offer info on whether the new Nokia TV will be pushed to users outside Finland as well, though it might unveil more on this soon. However, it seems that those users who own a Nokia Lumia smartphone and have the Marketplace link to the application can download and install the app even if they are outside Nokia’s homeland country.

HTC One X’s Broken Multitasking Is Normal, HTC Says - MobilEgypt

HTC One X, the high-end quad-core Android- based mobile phone that HTC made official in February at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, arrives on shelves with a crippled multitasking experience, recent reports unveil. Apparently, users have discovered that the new tweaks that HTC introduced in HTC One X to handle multitasking are resulting in unexpected behavior. The Taiwanese mobile phone maker has changed the vertical scrolling of apps to a horizontal one in the new Sense 4.0 UI loaded on its HTC One X , but made another important change as well. Users report that the device is force- closing the applications that run in the background, which results in a crippled experience. The stock Android platform does not do so, which clearly shows that the Taiwanese handset vendor has made some modifications in the area. However, it appears that this is how the smartphone was intended to behave, at least this is what the company reportedly told The Verge. “HTC is aware of some questions in the enthusiast community about how the HTC One X handles multitasking and memory management for background apps,” the vendor’s official statement on the matter reads. “We value the community's input and are always looking for ways to enhance customers' experience with our devices. That said, right now multitasking is operating normally according to our custom memory management specifications which balance core ICS features with a consistent HTC Sense experience.” At the moment, HTC One X users who would like to benefit from a different approach to multitasking than the one available on their devices should look elsewhere, though chances are that the vendor will review its position on the matter. Based on user feedback, HTC might decide to alter the current multitasking behavior of its smartphone, though no promise on this has been made, especially since the company is seeing this as a feature of the device, not as an issue.
