Boost Mobile's HTC Evo Design 4G hands on - MobilEgypt

NEW ORLEANS--If you remember the original HTC Evo Design 4G for Sprint, clear your mind of that as you contemplate this version for Boost Mobile. While the two handsets resemble each other, there are some marked differences. First, Boost's Design 4G runs on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, an OS upgrade. Second, it lacks the slide-out QWERTY keyboard so characteristic of the original Design 4G on Sprint. The phone still retains some girth, though; it's pretty thick. It might be a little too thick, but that really comes down to personal preference. It also has HTC's characteristic classy styling, and keeps the matte aluminum stripe on the back of the phone. Our team only had a few minutes to check out the phone before we were ushered out of the demo room, but I did register the 4-inch qHD touch screen and 5-megapixel rear-facing camera. There's a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera as well. The Design 4G also has a 1.2GHz processor. It'll cost $299.99 on May 31. I was a big fan of the original Evo 4G for Sprint, and although I think the Boost version is a little thick around the middle for not having a keyboard, I'm looking forward to seeing how the handset performs with 4G WiMax and Android Ice Cream Sandwich. It all seemed to hang together during, but it isn't the sexiest device I've seen on Boost, which in my mind is a brand that offers stylish phones. Still, being the first Ice Cream Sandwich and 4G offering carries a lot of weight -- and a fairly hefty up-front price.

Mobile device-makers who use Qualcomm's chipset to power their products will be able to offer their customers solutions other solutions for LTE, since their products would be able to ride the dta network provided by Clearwire's wholesale service. "We are pleased that Qualcomm will expand the size of the LTE ecosystem," said Clearwire CEO and president Erik Prusch in a statement, "By adding support for Clearwire's LTE frequency bands to their chipsets." Samsung and Qualcomm Partner on Wireless Charging - MobilEgypt

Samsung and Qualcomm, along with other industry leaders, have announced a partnership on the creation of the Alliance for Wireless Power (A4WP). The new organization was created to promote the standardization of wireless power transfer technology, to develop product testing, certification and regulatory compliance processes, and to work with regulators on wireless power policy development. The new alliance will target a wide range of devices and aims at establishing a worldwide wireless power technology ecosystem. The A4WP will work on new wireless power transfer technology to offer freedom for charging electrical devices in cars, on tabletops and for multiple devices simultaneously. The wireless power approach involves a transmitter and receiver antenna design, along with a wireless control system, and the possibility to transfer the power through nonmetallic surfaces. The goal is to provide the wireless charging capabilities to a multitude of devices, including Bluetooth headsets or tablet PCs. “Wireless power has the potential to increase convenience and improve the user experience in consumer devices like mobile phones by untethering the charging process,” Jason dePreaux, a research manager at IMS Research, stated. “For these benefits to be realized, wireless power infrastructure must be deployed to enable wireless charge points in the home, at work, or while traveling without concern for compatibility. Industry alliances will play a critical role in developing this infrastructure.” In addition to Samsung and Qualcomm, the A4WP also includes Ever Win Industries, Gill Industries, Peiker Acustic, Powermat Technologies, and SK Telecom. The alliance is open and welcomes members from the handheld devices industry, as well as those from consumer electronics and semiconductor products, wireless carriers, test equipment and retail. "A4WP will accelerate the commercialization of this technology and will contribute to expanding its market,” Executive Vice President KiHo Kim, head of digital media & communications R&D Center, Samsung Electronics, said. “As a founding member of A4WP, Samsung is committed to supporting standardization of wireless charging technology boasting spatial freedom, contributing to the eco-system, and exploring possibilities of a variety of services.”

T-Mobile: iPhone network compatibility coming this year - MobilEgypt

NEW ORLEANS--T-Mobile's network will be compatible with the iPhone later this year -- even if it isn't selling it, the company said today. The wireless carrier added that it had tapped Ericsson and Nokia-Siemens for its $4 billion 4G LTE deployment. The moves will address the two biggest gaps at T-Mobile: the lack of the iPhone and a more advanced 4G LTE network. Bogged down by its failed merger attempt with AT&T last year, the company has more recently shifted gears in hopes of mounting a comeback in the wireless market. A key development is the hiring of Ericsson and Nokia Siemens to handle the 4G LTE build- out. The companies have experience with the technology, working with Verizon Wireless, among others. T-Mobile said today that it secured its spectrum from AT&T last week as part of the merger breakup fee. Between the AT&T spectrum and the use of its own spectrum, T-Mobile hopes to cover 75 percent of its top 25 markets with LTE. The company, however, lacks sufficient spectrum for a broader deployment of LTE. To fill the gap, the carrier has focused on its HSPA + technology, which it argues is fast enough to be called 4G. The company plans to use 1900- megahertz spectrum for its upgraded HSPA+ network, and plans to have several of its markets covered by the end of the year. The 1900MHz spectrum is important because it lets the carrier support an unlocked iPhone on its 4G network. While T-Mobile doesn't sell the iPhone, many customers already take their iPhones to the carrier, although those phones can't tap into its fastest network because of spectrum conflicts. While not exactly carrying the iPhone, T-Mobile believes that capability will help it partially fill the gap. The carrier could also strike a deal with Apple, although neither company has given any recent updates. The HSPA+ network covers more than 220 million people in 229 markets, allowing T- Mobile to boast of the largest 4G network in the country. The company is attempting to prove it can turn itself around and show growth beyond the prepaid realm, despite the mounting competition. It plans to release its first-quarter results on Thursday.
