T-Mobile reportedly in talks to buy MetroPCS - MobilEgypt

It was only a year ago that T-Mobile USA made a splash when AT&T announced its intention to buy the number four U.S. wireless carrier. Now comes a turn for T-Mobile's parent company to consider an acquisition, this time of the nation's fifth largest carrier, MetroPCS. That word comes from Bloomberg, which broke the news earlier today. T-Mobile parent company Deutsche Telekom could merge MetroPCS and T-Mobile USA under a single entity, or it might sell off the business entirely, an option that has long been proposed for the U.S. carrier that's been steadily losing customers. More to come...

New iPhone, iPad launching later this year? - MobilEgypt

Just about everyone expects Apple to launch a new iPhone later this year, but according to a new report, the company might also unveil a new iPad. Taiwanese Apple supply partner Pegatron has scored the production of Apple's next iPhone , as well as a new iPad, Digitimes is reporting, citing sources. The blog, which has become well known for its rumors, claims Pegatron will need to have the next iPhone available for a September launch. The new iPad will be ready for a fourth-quarter launch, according to the site's sources. Digitimes added another wrinkle to its report, saying that the new iPad will come with a 10- inch display. It's not clear if the blog was simply rounding up, and the device will feature the same 9.7-inch screen found in Apple's current iPad, or if the Cupertino, Calif.-based company will be offering up a slate with a legitimately 10-inch screen. One of the biggest questions surrounding the Apple ecosystem right now is when the next iPhone will actually launch. Some rumors have pegged the release date at October, while others suggest it'll launch over the summer. A few rumors have cropped up claiming a September launch. Rumors of another iPad launching later this year have also popped up at times, though the focus of those reports has revolved around a 7-inch Apple slate. Digitimes cited the 7-inch iPad, as well, in today's report, saying that that option could hit store shelves in August. Apple has stuck to its customary silence on the matter, deciding instead to let the rumor mill build up the hype for it. Still, CNET has contacted Apple for comment on the Digitimes report. We will update this story when we have more information.

LG LS970 with Android 4.0 ICS and Quad- Core CPU Headed to Sprint - MobilEgypt

It looks like Samsung Galaxy S III won’t be the only Android flagship smartphone that Sprint plans to launch on its airwaves. The guys over at BriefMobile have been tipped on the upcoming LG LS970 device, which is a top tier Android phone that sports a large display and powerful processor. The good news is that the LG LS970 will be shipped with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system out of the box. The bad news is that the smartphone is slated for a Q4 2012 release. The screenshot of the unannounced device that has just been leaked online confirms that the handset is powered by a quad-core processor clocked at 1.5 GHz. In addition, the smartphone is said to boast an impressive 4.7-inch capacitive touchscreen display with HD (probably 720 x 1280 pixels) resolution. There are speculations that the screen is in fact a “True HD” IPS display, but there aren’t any details available that might confirm these speculations. Furthermore, the LG LS970 is packed with LTE support and touch-sensitive keys, instead of on-screen ones. So far, there are no additional details on the smartphone’s specs sheet, but we already know the important things. Even though the source of the leak did not specify which chipset the LG LS970 will pack, but there are speculations that this would be one of the first devices to embed a TI OMAP5 chipset, which is expected to arrive on the market in Q4 2012. According to the latest hearsay, the LG smartphone slated for a Sprint release will combine the power of a quad- core processor with the speed of LTE technology. Last but not least, the LG LS970 smartphone is dubbed LG G, though we’re not sure what the “G” means. We expect this LTE-enabled smartphone to be announced this fall.

Wide range of new smartphones kick off CTIA day 1 - MobilEgypt

New Orleans---The steady drum beat of mobile phone news picked up tempo today at CTIA. Matching the rising temperatures in the big easy, hot new handsets were unveiled or were shown to us for the first time. We also laid our hands on interesting mobile security solutions plus a collection of compelling accessories. Read on for some highlights of what the CNET gang uncovered on site. Phones for everyone First Lynn La took a look at the rough and tumble Kyocera Hydro that's water-resistant and built to survive the abuse this cruel world can dish out. Lynn also spent time with the Kycocera Rise that boasts a responsive physical keyboard to let nimble fingers do the talking. Next, Jessica Dolcourt and I were treated to some hands on time with Virgin Mobile's first 4G phone, the HTC Evo V 4G . Really a re- branded HTC Evo 3D that Sprint says will also link to its older WiMax 4G infrastructure. Sprint also talked up a new software security suite, called Guardian that makes rolling out security software to multiple Android handsets on a family plan a breeze. The big treat of the day though was the time Jessica Dolcourt and I spent in the presence of Samsung's upcoming super phone, the Galaxy S III. Not only is this phone more gorgeous to behold up close, its quad-core performance and feature list mark it as the next Android phone to dethrone. At Pepcom, CTIA's evening event, Lynn La also gave the $99 Pal by Clarity a spin. Made specifically for seniors, this no-frills handset offers the comfort of large rubber buttons, loud audio, plus support for hearing aids. I too got in on the action by taking a closer look at the global version of the HTC One V , a compact and elegant phone meant for European and Asian markets. Other interesting accessories include the ClarityHD Micro portable Bluetooth speaker that aims to push the Jawbone Jambox off of its pediestal. All this happened on just the first official day of the show. You can bet there will be lots of other news in the days to come. Check back all week for the latest CTIA 2012 developments.

Sprint to Join the Windows Phone 8 Launch Party - MobilEgypt

This fall, Microsoft is expected to launch a new flavor of its Windows Phone operating system, and Sprint is one of the wireless carriers which might add devices powered by it to its offering. This is not the first time when the carrier is said to have such plans, although nothing was specifically announced on the matter. At the CTIA trade show, Sprint’s director of consumer acquisition, David Owens, reportedly stated that he was “bullish on Apollo.” This suggests that Windows Phone 8, which sports the codename of Apollo, is one viable option for the wireless carrier. Sprint already had Windows Phone devices available for its customers, including the HTC Arrive, but did not register success with them. However, Owens appears convinced that the upcoming OS flavor would be capable to make a difference. He said so at CES in January, and reiterated it at CTIA, PCMag reports. In January, he also stated that Sprint was considering the launch of new Windows Phones in August- September, which pointed at devices running under the upcoming OS flavor. For the time being, no official word on devices that would be powered by the next-gen mobile platform from Microsoft has emerged. Sprint and other wireless carriers also have to make formal announcements on any plans to add such handsets to their networks. At the moment, Windows Phone is trailing popular mobile OSes such as Android, iOS and BlackBerry, but started to gain some more ground after Nokia launched smartphones powered by it. Moreover, Microsoft and its partners have been focused on packing new devices with the latest advancements in the mobile industry, such as support for 4G LTE networks (AT&T already launched three such devices). Windows Phone 8 should raise the bar higher still. It was rumored to deliver support for better hardware, including multi-core application processors that power today’s most popular Android devices (Apple’s iPhone also features a multi-core chip inside). This means that Sprint’s upcoming Windows Phone lineup could include dual-core phones capable of connecting to its LTE network as well, thus proving much more appealing than HTC Arrive did.
