Samsung wins one in Apple patent-infringement case - MobilEgypt

Samsung today won an important ruling against Apple in Germany. The Mannheim Regional Court ruled today that Samsung does not violate a patent Apple holds related to touchscreen functionality in mobile devices. According to the Korea Times, which was first to report on the judgement, the patent in question relates to the way a touchscreen interprets finger inputs. Apple and Samsung have been waging a bitter patent battle all over the world. Neither company had gained an upper hand until last month when a jury in San Jose, Calif., charged Samsung with copying Apple's products. Over the next few months, Samsung could be forced to pay out over $1 billion in damages and might see some of its mobile devices banned from sale. Samsung told the Korea Times in a statement today that it plans to "continue to further develop and introduce products that enhance the lives of German consumers." According to Reuters, the court didn't just stop at Samsung. Motorola, which was also cited in an Apple lawsuit over the touchscreen technology, was likewise found not to violate the iPhone maker's patent. Apple, of course, isn't in danger of running out of claims. The company has several lawsuits against both Samsung and Motorola in courts across the U.S. and Europe. Many of those suits likely won't be resolved for several months. Meanwhile, Apple's competitors are reportedly considering firing more salvos. Earlier this month, reports surfaced, saying Samsung would launch a lawsuit against Apple's iPhone 5 over its use of 4G LTE . The company claims the integration violates patents it holds related to the speedy wireless service.

RIM, Motorola try compromise in Apple nano-SIM battle - MobilEgypt

Some of the most prominent mobile companies in the world are currently working on a new standard for SIM cards. The only issue is, they can't come to an agreement. But three of those firms yesterday tried to get one step closer to an accord. According to The Verge, citing sources, RIM, Nokia, and Motorola yesterday unveiled a new concept design for the nano-SIM standard . The card itself looks similar to its elders, featuring a rectangular design with a notched corner. However, like other nano-SIM design concepts, the latest from RIM, Nokia, and Motorola is extremely small, potentially paving the way for new design concepts, and the opportunity for more storage, despite less real estate on the card's face. The new design is an important one. Apple, which has its own nano-SIM concept, couldn't come to terms with the mobile companies over the design of the standard. At a meeting back in March at the European Telecommunications Standards Institute, Apple brought one design concept to the table, while its competitors brought another. The original concept from Nokia, Motorola, and RIM, feature a dramatically different design that Apple took issue with. The other companies, meanwhile, didn't want to give Apple the standard straight away, potentially creating a scenario where both concepts could be used in the mobile space -- an unacceptable issue for many. So, rather than vote on the standards, ETSI announced that it had delayed the vote to decide which concept would be the new standard , pending "broad industry consensus." According to The Verge, which obtained the new design concept plans from Motorola, Nokia, and RIM, the companies have tried to compromise with Apple by bringing to its design "80 percent" of what Apple wanted. The remaining 20 percent is made up of those features the mobile companies were after. Whether Apple will accept the proposal remains to be seen. However, the companies will be meeting with each other between May 31 and June 1 in Japan to once again discuss the nano-SIM standard. Although a vote could be held that day to determine what will become the standard, it's not a definite.

Apple's iPad WiFi + 4G renamed 'iPad WiFi + Cellular' across many of its online stores - MobilEgypt

Remember Apple's new iPad WiFi + 4G? Well, forget that moniker, as this variant of the company's latest slate has been quietly re-dubbed as the iPad WiFi + Cellular. As noticed by 9to5Mac , the change occurred within the last "24-48 hours" across many of Apple's region specific webstores, including (but not limited to) those for the US, UK, Australia, Canada and various countries in Asia. If you'll recall, in many regions the best you'll get out of the slate is HSPA- connectivity (although, the slate is also equipped for LTE) -- something that Apple itself had considered good enough to be considered 4G, even after offering refunds to customers in Australia who (like many others) can't partake in its LTE. Interestingly, 9to5Mac also notes that a similar change hasn't made its way over to the iPad 2, which still has its cellular- equipped variant still dubbed, iPad 2 WiFi + 3G. We're reaching out to Apple for comment, so stay tuned. In the meantime, feel free to hit up the source links below for more insight.

New iPhone, iPad launching later this year? - MobilEgypt

Just about everyone expects Apple to launch a new iPhone later this year, but according to a new report, the company might also unveil a new iPad. Taiwanese Apple supply partner Pegatron has scored the production of Apple's next iPhone , as well as a new iPad, Digitimes is reporting, citing sources. The blog, which has become well known for its rumors, claims Pegatron will need to have the next iPhone available for a September launch. The new iPad will be ready for a fourth-quarter launch, according to the site's sources. Digitimes added another wrinkle to its report, saying that the new iPad will come with a 10- inch display. It's not clear if the blog was simply rounding up, and the device will feature the same 9.7-inch screen found in Apple's current iPad, or if the Cupertino, Calif.-based company will be offering up a slate with a legitimately 10-inch screen. One of the biggest questions surrounding the Apple ecosystem right now is when the next iPhone will actually launch. Some rumors have pegged the release date at October, while others suggest it'll launch over the summer. A few rumors have cropped up claiming a September launch. Rumors of another iPad launching later this year have also popped up at times, though the focus of those reports has revolved around a 7-inch Apple slate. Digitimes cited the 7-inch iPad, as well, in today's report, saying that that option could hit store shelves in August. Apple has stuck to its customary silence on the matter, deciding instead to let the rumor mill build up the hype for it. Still, CNET has contacted Apple for comment on the Digitimes report. We will update this story when we have more information.

Android reclaims 61 percent of all U.S. smartphone sales - MobilEgypt

Android has staged a healthy lead over Apple's iOS as the smartphone wars continue. Looking at the first quarter of the year, NPD Group pegged Android's U.S. market share at 61 percent, a jump over the 49 percent recorded in last year's fourth quarter. On the flip side, iOS lost ground with a 29 percent market share, down from 41 percent during 2011's final quarter. Apple's holiday surge in customers came courtesy of heavy demand for the iPhone 4S, which debuted last October. After the new year kicked in, Android won back the lost ground to recapture the same market share it held during the third quarter. But no tears need be shed for Apple. Though the company lost share last quarter, the baseline is now higher as a result of added iPhone distribution through Sprint, NPD said. Collectively, Apple and Android now hold 90 percent of all smartphone sales in the U.S. Smartphones overall failed to gain further traction as a percentage of all mobile phone sales. But they still grabbed 66 percent of all handset sales (post-paid and pre-paid) last quarter, according to NPD. All ten of the top- selling models in the first quarter were smartphones, half of them from Apple, three of them from Samsung, and one each from Motorola and HTC. The smartphone market also has plenty of room left to expand. Almost half of all smartphone buyers last quarter moved up from a feature phone. Who's buying all those smartphones? More than two out of three people ages 25 to 34 own a smartphone, according to the latest research from Nielsen . Men and women are split almost evenly, with 50.9 percent of female mobile users carrying a smartphone and 50.1 percent of men. Asian Americans led the way in smartphone ownership with 67.3 percent using one as their main mobile handset. Almost three in five Hispanic mobile users now have smartphones, while a majority of African-Americans own one, Nielsen added. Android also remains the top dog in the U.S., according to Nielsen, though the research firm gave it a 48 percent market share for last quarter, followed by Apple's iOS with 32 percent. But Apple continues to reign as the top smartphone maker.

Apple launches iOS 5.1.1 to address bugs - MobilEgypt

Apple has launched an update to its iOS platform. The company's iOS 5.1.1 update comes with bug fixes for AirPlay video playback and the "Unable to purchase" error message popping up after users buy something from their device. In addition, Apple fixed a bug that prevented the new iPad from switching between 2G and 3G networks. Apple's iOS 5.1.1 update comes just a couple of months after the company revealed iOS 5.1 . That update delivered a host of new bug fixes, a few interface tweaks, and even a hint that the next iPhone could come with 4G LTE support. Some reports suggested the operating system version also improved the platform's battery life. iOS 5.1.1 is available now as a free download. Current iOS 5 users can head over to their General > Software Update pane to install the new software.

Apple, Samsung put hammerlock on smartphone profits - MobilEgypt

Apple and Samsung essentially own the entire mobile phone market now, leaving nothing but scraps left over for the rest of the pack. Tracking the industry's various players , Dediu found that Apple now holds 73 percent of all operating profits and Samsung 26 percent, leaving HTC with just 1 percent. Some mobile phone makers, such as Motorola and Sony Ericsson, haven't seen a profit in years, according to Dediu, while LG has just about been breaking even since 2009. RIM and Nokia have been struggling to regain their former footholds, but both companies are being hit hard by the heavy competition. Yet the industry itself remains strong. First- quarter profits soared to $14.4 billion from $5.4 billion just two years ago. Of course, most of that is being grabbed by Apple. But it's not so much that the iPhone maker has captured profits away from the other players but that Apple has created a new "pool of profits," according to Dediu. And just what is that pool? Carrier subsidies for the iPhone 4S, says the analyst. The carriers willingly cough up a premium to Apple to sell the iPhone for two reasons: 1) It provides a competitive advantage; and 2) it keeps their customers from jumping ship. That's why 250 carriers around the world now offer the iPhone, says Dediu (though 250 others still don't) "Following this value proposition to its logical conclusion would suggest that the industry is rewarding those who can supply computers- as-phones which preserve the cash flows of what is essentially a trillion dollar data services business," according to Dediu. "Vendors which cannot offer this solution saw their businesses implode. At least on the high end."
