Research In Motion is in the process of pushing its new BlackBerry Curve 9320 and Curve 9220 smartphones to more markets globally, and Latin America is the latest of them to receive the handsets. The company has just announced the upcoming availability of these phones in Latin America, stressing on the social networking and messaging capabilities that they have to offer to all users. Although it unveiled plans to release these phones on the continent, RIM hasn’t yet provided specific details on launch partners, nor on the specific availability dates and pricing for the two devices. However, it did say that users who purchase these phones would be able to download a selection of apps for free from the BlackBerry App World until October 1st, 2012. These apps are worth US$25 and include Nobex Radio Premium, Color ID, Screen Muncher and Photo Editor Ultimate, among other. Combined with long battery life and an easy to type keyboard for fast messaging, the new BlackBerry handsets can easily prove a great option for socially connected users on this continent, RIM suggests. "The BlackBerry Curve series of smartphones have been very well received by customers in Latin America as the best messaging and social-centric smartphones in the world," said Rick Costanzo, regional managing director for the Americas at Research In Motion. "We have worked closely with our distributors and carrier partners in Latin America to make it attractive and easy for customers to own either of these two new BlackBerry Curve smartphones." The new smartphones arrive on shelves with integrated social networking, as well as with pre-loaded Facebook and Twitter apps. Moreover, they can keep users on top of messaging and news updates through a single application, the Social Feeds 2.0. Not to mention that both of them come with a dedicated BBM key, which was specifically designed to provide users with access to RIM's popular mobile social network in no time. Research In Motion (RIM) has just announced the immediate availability of BlackBerry Bold 9900 smartphone in Russia. Customers can now purchase the handset through RIM authorised carrier partners Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) and Vimpelcom. Although the Bold 9900 has been launched on the market for quite some time, for whatever reasons RIM decided to delay the release of the smartphone in Russia until today. The Bold 9900 will be shipped with BlackBerry 7 operating system out of the box, but it will probably receive an OS 7.1 update in the following months. BlackBerry 7 platform offers users an improved Internet browsing experience thanks to the new BlackBerry browser, which combines enhanced performance of the WebKit browser engine, along with powerful hardware improvements of the Bold 9900. According to RIM, the Bold 9900 is the first BlackBerry smartphone to be shipped with support for NFC (Near Field Communications) capability, allowing users to make mobile payments, pair accessories or read SmartPoster tags. Hardware-wise, BlackBerry Bold 9900 is the most powerful smartphone released by RIM. The smartphone is equipped with a 1.2 GHz single core QC 8655 processor, 768MB of RAM and 8GB of internal memory, which can be expanded up to 32GB via microSD card. In addition, the handset sports a decent 2.8-inch capacitive touchscreen display that supports 640 x 480 pixels resolution. Some of the most prominent mobile companies in the world are currently working on a new standard for SIM cards. The only issue is, they can't come to an agreement. But three of those firms yesterday tried to get one step closer to an accord. According to The Verge, citing sources, RIM, Nokia, and Motorola yesterday unveiled a new concept design for the nano-SIM standard . The card itself looks similar to its elders, featuring a rectangular design with a notched corner. However, like other nano-SIM design concepts, the latest from RIM, Nokia, and Motorola is extremely small, potentially paving the way for new design concepts, and the opportunity for more storage, despite less real estate on the card's face. The new design is an important one. Apple, which has its own nano-SIM concept, couldn't come to terms with the mobile companies over the design of the standard. At a meeting back in March at the European Telecommunications Standards Institute, Apple brought one design concept to the table, while its competitors brought another. The original concept from Nokia, Motorola, and RIM, feature a dramatically different design that Apple took issue with. The other companies, meanwhile, didn't want to give Apple the standard straight away, potentially creating a scenario where both concepts could be used in the mobile space -- an unacceptable issue for many. So, rather than vote on the standards, ETSI announced that it had delayed the vote to decide which concept would be the new standard , pending "broad industry consensus." According to The Verge, which obtained the new design concept plans from Motorola, Nokia, and RIM, the companies have tried to compromise with Apple by bringing to its design "80 percent" of what Apple wanted. The remaining 20 percent is made up of those features the mobile companies were after. Whether Apple will accept the proposal remains to be seen. However, the companies will be meeting with each other between May 31 and June 1 in Japan to once again discuss the nano-SIM standard. Although a vote could be held that day to determine what will become the standard, it's not a definite.

It appears that the folks at OSBB discovered the names of some of RIM’s BlackBerry 10 upcoming devices. According to them, these names are hidden in the Dev Alpha’s viewable file system. The following names have been found within BlackBerry 10 OS files: Nevada, Winchester2 LTE, Winchester2 HSPA, Winchester2 LTE HSPA, Colt, London, Blackforest, Nashville, and Naples. Developers who received the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha can verify the information on their device by typing file:///radio/etc/sv.numbers in the browser. We already heard about BlackBerry Colt and London, but we don’t know anything about the rest of the devices mentioned on this list. Rumor has it that Winchester is in fact the Blackberry PlayBook 3G and 4G, while the Blackforest might be the 10- inch PlayBook. This is the first time we hear about Naples and Nashville, which will probably be the first Blackberry 10 devices that are expected to be officially released in Q4 2012. Apple and Samsung essentially own the entire mobile phone market now, leaving nothing but scraps left over for the rest of the pack. Tracking the industry's various players , Dediu found that Apple now holds 73 percent of all operating profits and Samsung 26 percent, leaving HTC with just 1 percent. Some mobile phone makers, such as Motorola and Sony Ericsson, haven't seen a profit in years, according to Dediu, while LG has just about been breaking even since 2009. RIM and Nokia have been struggling to regain their former footholds, but both companies are being hit hard by the heavy competition. Yet the industry itself remains strong. First- quarter profits soared to $14.4 billion from $5.4 billion just two years ago. Of course, most of that is being grabbed by Apple. But it's not so much that the iPhone maker has captured profits away from the other players but that Apple has created a new "pool of profits," according to Dediu. And just what is that pool? Carrier subsidies for the iPhone 4S, says the analyst. The carriers willingly cough up a premium to Apple to sell the iPhone for two reasons: 1) It provides a competitive advantage; and 2) it keeps their customers from jumping ship. That's why 250 carriers around the world now offer the iPhone, says Dediu (though 250 others still don't) "Following this value proposition to its logical conclusion would suggest that the industry is rewarding those who can supply computers- as-phones which preserve the cash flows of what is essentially a trillion dollar data services business," according to Dediu. "Vendors which cannot offer this solution saw their businesses implode. At least on the high end."
