Kanavos Windows Phone Concept Bets Big on Tiles - MobilEgypt

Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform did manage to bring a change to the manner in which users look at mobile phones, making that step away from the crowd, but the OS might still have a lot to evolve before becoming a leader on the market. One of the main features of the platform is its consistency across devices coming from different handset vendors, yet one designer believes that a series of issues can be found here as well. According to Alexandros Stasinopoulos , there are only few Windows Phones that indeed manage to blend the platform into the hardware, and that this is the aspect that handset vendors should take into consideration when designing new smartphones.
He also proposes a new approach to Windows Phone, called Kanavos and aimed specifically at bringing the handset and the software running on it together. “Kanavos suggests a bold industrial design through a number of vertical and horizontal contrast color stripes that is visually completed through the recent minimal but strong windows mobile user interface design,” Stasinopoulos explains. “What is shown on the main menu screen does not disrupt any more the design of the device but, instead, the black stripes of the Windows OS meet the ones of the hardware and thus the OS becomes, in a sense, a bridge between the two sides of the device.”
The concept design proposes the relocation of the “Windows” button from the center of the lower part of the phone to its left and right sides, a move that would facilitate the access to its functions. Having so many stripes on a mobile phone might not be a feature that all users would like, but the concept certainly seems highly interesting, especially when considering its proposed consistency across hardware and software. Many people have already started to show increased interest in Nokia’s new Windows Phone 8 smartphones, which makes us wonder whether a device resembling Kanavos will prove successful or not. Let us know what you think of it by dropping a comment below.

Nokia TV App Arrives on Nokia’s Windows Phones - MobilEgypt

Last month, Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia announced the upcoming availability of its Nokia TV application for devices running under Windows Phone, though confirmed it only for users in its homeland country. Today, we learn that the mobile application is available for download for Nokia Lumia users in Finland, providing them with access to favorite TV shows straight from their mobile phones. All that users need to do is to search for it in the app portal. In the Windows Phone Marketplace, the new mobile application is listed as capable of providing users with the possibility to browse lists of television services available locally at a single site. Moreover, it will also enable them to easily search all services available at one time, and to select the show they want to watch and start playing immediately. When announcing the mobile app, Nokia said that it would offer support for broadcasters’ existing internet TV business models. Nokia TV users will be able to browse or search through the available catalogues of TV services from major local broadcasters without the need to sign-up or register. Moreover, they will be able to play these TV shows on their devices without registration as well. Nokia TV is yet another exclusive application that the Finnish handset vendor has launched for its users, in an attempt to differentiate from other phone makers. Previously, Nokia provided its Windows Phone users with applications such as Nokia Music and Nokia Reading, as well as with access to navigation services through the Nokia Maps app. Unfortunately, the company did not offer info on whether the new Nokia TV will be pushed to users outside Finland as well, though it might unveil more on this soon. However, it seems that those users who own a Nokia Lumia smartphone and have the Marketplace link to the application can download and install the app even if they are outside Nokia’s homeland country.

Details on Nokia Drive 3.0 and Nokia Transport 2.0 Emerge - MobilEgypt

Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia is moving closer to the release of two new applications for its Windows Phone devices, namely Nokia Drive 3.0 and Nokia Transport 2.0. The company has already offered a preview of the new flavor of Nokia Drive at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February, but hasn’t yet provided a specific release date for it. However, the guys over at WP7Forum.ru have discovered additional details on the application, and have also come up with a series of screenshots of it in action. One of the main new features that we should expect to make it inside Nokia Drive 3.0 would be its capability to learn driving habits based on user’s own “style,” thus becoming more efficient and personal. Additionally, the software will arrive with real-time tracking of travel and density of traffic movements, and will deliver such info via a live tile. Other features include automatic determination of time of day, along with the change of color scheme cards accordingly. It will also offer the option to manually adjust routes, and will come with off-line favorite lists, providing the possibility to fix tiles on the desktop. When it comes to Nokia Transport 2.0 app, said Russian forum unveiled the fact that it would enable users to search for public transport using their location, and that it would deliver info on nearby transportation: buses, trains, trams, subways, taxis, marked stops. Other features include the displaying of routes with transfers, support for scheduling in 87 countries around the world, and fast access to Favorites. The software also comes with advanced search, the options to save query history or to change the query without a new route, as well as with faster search and installation of the route and with a series of optimizations brought to its overall performance. As WMPoweruser notes, details on when the updated application versions will arrive on Nokia’s Windows Phone devices should emerge in a matter of weeks, so stay tuned for more on the matter.
